Christians of Pakistan

While we talk about the minority rights and specially the Christian community, we have to keep in mind that how the Christian community took part in standing Muslim league and Mohammad Ali Jinnah’s campaign for a separate homeland for the Muslim minority living then I united India under the British rule.

In the Punjab legislative assembly the number of Hindu and Muslim members was even. Twice the resolution of Pakistan ended in a draw. Then M.A. Jinnah requested the four Christian members of the Punjab assembly to support Muslim league’s resolution and in this way they voted in favor of the resolution and it was passed in Punjab legislative assembly. Due to this reason a lot of areas now included in Pakistan where the Muslim population was 47% and 4% Christian population were considered with the Muslim population giving the simple majority of 51%. Those areas were then included in Pakistan by the boundary commission.

In the early years Christians provided full cooperation in all aspects of life to the Pakistani government. Especially in the fields of education and health the Christian institutions scattered throughout Pakistan provided their services in these two specific fields, which have never been appreciated by the ruling class and so called leaders. Instead Christians were always treated as anti Pakistan and Islam. Our institutions were snatched by Bhutto government and the part takers in the making of Pakistan were considered as minority and second class citizens, even the right to choose our parliament members. Winning part selects those, who are their court men.

After the era of General Zia ul Haq there was a huge uprising of Islamic radical elements. The Afghan was provided a shield to this uprising, supported by the western and European governments. Although it was against Russia, but these radical elements divided into many groups and fighting for their own Islamic agendas. Then the Benazir government and the Nawaz government started providing shelter to the religious groups. These groups were openly proclaiming their anti Christian agenda. No government specially the Nawaz Sharif Government disowned their agenda rather his government always helped the Taliban. His government in 1990-1993 passed the laws against minorities, which are now swinging on the minorities’ heads like a sword. The Islamic groups became stronger and stronger day by day and won favors of majority in general. Now besides these prevailing circumstances the Christian churches although their heart burning desire could not perform their role in harmony. They are always threat by mullahs.

They cannot claim anything as their right. They provide the education in their religious Marissa’s based on hatred and anti peace syllabus. The government of Punjab and KPK are fully convinced by their agenda and system and give them all the possible help. While generally the Muslim governments are trying hard to soften the face of Islam. They are trying to thereon dust into the eyes of West and Europe. The nongovernmental organizations of both West and Europe are providing funds to the fundamentalists unaware of their motives hidden behind their soft image. Their funds are being used in spreading terrorism and de-establishing governments throughout the world.

The Western and European governments should take some measures to put a check on such NGO’s working their agendas. The Christians living in Pakistan need the attention of UNO and the liberal democratic West and Europe. Otherwise the Christian community in Pakistan will suffer seriously and may abolish one day.
